We have finished 10 weeks of the 2019 season and it alternatively feels like yesterday and a lifetime ago that we looked ahead to the first season of Dana Holgorsen coaching this football program.

A few players have changed their redshirt eligible/not eligible status and some promising youngsters made their Cougar debut, so let's get to it!

OFFENSE/SPECIAL TEAMS:

Announced Redshirt: RB Mulbah Car (Sr.), WR Keith Corbin (Sr.), OG/C Braylon Jones (Sr.), QB D’Eriq King (Sr.)

Redshirt Eligible: RB Terrell Brown (Fr.), QB Clayton Tune (Soph.)

Not Redshirt Eligible: TE Bo Alexander (Sr.), OG Max Banes (RS-Fr.), OG/OT Dennis Bardwell (Jr.), OG/OT Jordan Boatman (Soph.), WR Tre’von Bradley (Soph.), RB Patrick Carr (Sr.), TE Shane Creamer (Soph.), TE Parker Eichenberger (Soph.), C Jack Freeman (RS-Fr.), QB Logan Holgorsen (Fr.), OT Josh Jones (Sr.), WR Courtney Lark (Sr.), WR Terry Mark (Sr.), WR Cole McGowan (Jr.), WR Ja’Kori Morgan (RS-Fr.), OG Keenan Murphy (Jr.), OG Gio Pancotti (Jr.), RB Kyle Porter (Jr.), K Kyle Ramsey (Fr.), P Dane Roy (Sr.), WR Jeremy Singleton (Soph.), WR Bryson Smith (Soph.), RB Chandler Smith (Jr.), TE Christian Trahan (Soph.), LS Nick Wildberger (Sr.), OT Jarrid Williams (Sr.), K Dalton Witherspoon (Jr.), OT Dixie Wooten III (Soph.)

The one move in statuses on offense this week is one that apparently happened last week that I will acknowledge now. Logan Holgorsen saw action in his 5th game against SMU and I confirmed is listed among UH players who participated in the SMU game. This isn’t terribly surprising as the Cougar staff would’ve had to work hard to keep the younger Holgorsen out of any remaining games.

Its not really a change of status, but I moved Mulbah Car from Redshirt Eligible to ‘Anounced’ because Holgorsen has publicly stated on many occasions that he’ll be limited to 4 games and return in 2020. Now that Car has played his 4th game of the year, moving him to the group of King/Corbin/Jones seemed fitting. If you’re a Cougar fan looking for some hope, the sight of Car gashing through 2 good run defenses in SMU and UCF is a sight for sore eyes. In only 4 games Car is averaging just under 100 rush yards per game, easily the best per game average on the team.

If Patrick Carr still isn’t healthy enough to go after the bye week against Memphis, I expect Chandler Smith and possibly true freshman Terrell Brown (who is still redshirt eligible) to split carries along with Kyle Porter.

I feel like we’re also likely to see Clayton Tune start against Memphis and thus not be eligible for a redshirt season in 2019. I’m not saying the coaching staff sitting Tune is completely out of the question, though. This is pretty likely not to be a bowl season, regardless of whether Tune is or isn’t taking snaps. But there’s also a question of the developmental value these next 3 games have for a young quarterback like Tune who is starting to show glimpses of figuring out the college game.

DEFENSE:

Announced Redshirt: None

Redshirt Eligible: DT Atlias Bell (Jr.), S Gleson Sprewell (Jr.), DE Taures Payne (Jr.) CB Ka’Darian Smith (Sr.), DE Willie Smith III (Soph.), DE Nelson Ceaser (Fr.), S Ron Nunnery (Fr.)

Not Redshirt Eligible: S Deontay Anderson (Jr.), DE David Anenih (Jr.), LB Jordan Carmouche (Jr.), DE Isaiah Chambers (Jr.), LB Terrance Edgeston (Jr.), NG Aymiel Fleming (Sr.), DE Leroy Godfrey (Sr.), LB DeKalen Goodson (RS-Fr.), DT Logan Hall (Soph.), DE Noah Jones (Soph.), LB Zamar Kirven (Soph.), CB Shaun Lewis (Soph.), S Jordan Moore (RS-Fr.), LB Donavan Mutin (Soph.), DT Jamykal Neal (Jr.), CB/S Gervarrius Owens (Soph.), DE Derek Parish (Soph.), CB DJ Small (Jr.), S Grant Stuard (Jr.), DE/DT Payton Turner (Jr.), S Garrison Vaughn (RS-Fr.), CB Damarion Williams (Jr.), LB/S Amaud Willis-Dalton (Soph.), DT Blake Young (Sr.)

I’m still unclear on whether Terrance Edgeston did play in the SMU game, but as I expected last week it was rendered a moot point and Edgeston started against UCF on Saturday. Zamar Kirven also saw action as a reserve and with 5 games played Kirven is no longer eligible for a redshirt in 2019.

Unlike the Cougar offense, I don’t expect we’ll see much movement between the various statuses. Guys like Gleson Sprewell, Atlias Bell, Ka’Darian Smith and Taures Payne seemed destined to be held at 4 games or less and redshirt.

I was intrigued to see 2 of the most promising freshmen from the 2019 signing class make their Cougar debuts on Saturday: Nelson Ceaser and Ron Nunnery. Ceaser was the top-rated high school recruit in the class and an early coup when the new UH staff convinced him to stay with the Coogs. Nunnery was a 3-star recruit who was a key player for a Shadow Creek High team that went to a state championship game as a first-year varsity program.

One more note: Willie Smith III saw action for his 2nd game in as many weeks against UCF, but I’ll be surprised if he still doesn’t play in 4 games or less and redshirt this season.
